Indian handicrafts that make way for interesting décor pieces!

India is a country of rich heritage and tradition. Besides being a beautiful country the nation also offers a lot of beautiful handicrafts and art products, some even centuries old. These products when displayed or used make for an interesting space and also helps in exhibiting our country’s rich and varied heritage. I have selected seven of my favorite crafts, all protected under the geographical indication, which would make for great statement décor pieces for any interiors.

Channapatna Toys, Karnataka (wood)

Fondly known as ‘toy-town’ channapatna houses this two century old toy art and is one of the best artifacts businesses of India. The specialty of these toys is their lacquered finish obtained from the leaves of a regional tree. The difference between these and the Thanjavur toys is that the thanjavur toys are mostly blobby headed and are made of terracotta whereas channapatna toys are made of Ivory wood.

These toys can used as show pieces or simple décor accents. They bring in a dash of color and are very suitable for decorating kids’ rooms.

Bastar wrought iron crafts, Chattisgarh (metal)

Wrought iron is beautiful piece of material and product made from it brings in an essence of rusty elegance to any place. But Chattisgarh offers more than just wrought iron chandeliers or lanterns, they offer a variety of products all of whichlook attractive and surely helps in elevating the look of interiors.

The products available can be used as showpieces, wall hangings, grill works and of course lanterns and pendants and much more.

Khurja Pottery, Uttar Pradesh (clay)

While talking about handicrafts of India how could we miss out on pottery, Made out of clay the products range from utensils to big show pieces in bright colors. The colors and patterns on the products are so bright that it can liven up any dull space. Pudhucherry offers a similar craft

These can be used as plain show pieces, or the pots can be used for greenery, the plates can be used as wall fixtures (may sound old style but the looks really does elevate the look of your interiors).

Terracotta work, Assam (terracotta)

Quirky masks, pots, light holders and much more come under this art and is a very eco-friendly art which provides a very earthy tone to the interiors.

The products make for interesting décor pieces like funny masks with a little resemblance to the African masks and the light holders for exterior and much more.

Marble work, Agra

I mean who wouldn’t want a Taj Mahal, the ivory-white marbled epitome of beauty and one hell of a monument but these artisans can give you the next best the gorgeous marble work. Beautiful patterns laid out on a neutral, expensive but worth it.

Can be used a table top for any table but can be preferred to center table or side boards.

Pipli aplique work, Odisha (Fabric)

Now these products show the true skin of India, bright colorful patterns, jhumkas, mirrors and excellent craftsmanship. This is every inch desi at heart and make. Rogan printing of Gujarat is also a very beautiful work of handicraft that can be an alternative.

Would make for beautiful bohemian or morocco décor pieces.

Seashell crafts, Andaman

Very obvious to its land of origin, these life like murals are what your interiors might be missing to reach the quirky quotient.

Very suitable for exterior décor and interesting display pieces.

Other than these there are some gorgeous crafts of bamboo and cane India which might interest you!
